The Short of It
A 9-year-old reporter issues strong words to critics who think she'd be better off playing with dolls at her age than chasing after stories.
Hilde Lysiak, whose dad is former New York Daily News reporter Matt Lysiak, is one of Selinsgrove, Penn.'s most esteemed reporters, despite her young age. She even has her own newspaper, The Orange Street News, in which she covers local stories, including crimes, like burglaries, and most recently, a murder.

The story she actually broke was headlined "EXCLUSIVE: MURDER ON NINTH STREET!" and it detailed the death of a woman by a hammer.
"I got a tip from a good source and was able to confirm it," she said in a video that has since gone viral, adding, "I had the information on my website hours before the competition even got there."

The clip of Hilde talking about the murder is a bit shocking, given her age, but that's not what the young reporter wants to hear. After locals commented on the gumshoe's site that she would be better off playing with dolls or having tea parties, she fired back with the video, which starts out with Hilde reading critical comments about her reporting and laughing at them. Reminder: She's 9; not even most adults can't laugh off criticism.
Then the reporter issues a message to those who think she should be doing what "normal" kids her age do:
"I know this makes some of you uncomfortable. And I know some of you just want me to sit down and be quiet because I'm 9. But if you want me to stop covering the news, then you get off your computer and do something about the news. There, is that cute enough for you?"
Since the video was posted to YouTube, it has received more than 83,000 views. Hilde told Yahoo Beauty about her inspiration for creating the video, saying, "I just wanted to lay it out there. I wanted to put it out there that it didn't matter much to me what they're saying, and just because I am 9 and a girl, doesn't mean I can't do great reporting."

Well, snap Hilde! I applaud you for handling yourself so well in the face of adversity. Because the truth is, no one can tell you that you can't do something if you truly believe you can, and as a mom of an almost 8-year-old daughter, I can't think of a better message. Just stay safe out there!
