The Short of It
Your heart will break, as mine did, for new mother Kerrie Orozco, a seven-year veteran on the Omaha, Neb., police force, who lost her life in a shootout on what should have been one of the happiest days of her life.
Orozco had recently welcomed her first child, a daughter she named Olivia Ruth. The baby was born prematurely and was set to come home from the hospital the very next day after her mom died.
The tragic events played out when Orozco was serving a warrant. She was shot and rushed to the hospital, but doctors were unable to save her.
The subject of the warrant, a known gang member, was also killed in the shootout.
Scores of people have gathered outside the precinct where the brave cop worked to pay their respects.
"She saw the good in all people," a partner of Orozco's said about her.
It is unknown if baby Olivia was still able to come home and be with her father and two step-siblings.
We feel deeply for this family and can only hope one day the little girl, who will grow up without a mother, knows how much Orozco was admired and respected.
