The Short of It
Wisconsin parents had their 9-year-old daughter drive them home because they were too drunk.
Jason Roth and Amanda Eggert have pleaded not guilty to charges of recklessly endangering the safety of and neglecting a child after they were pulled over a week ago in rural Wisconsin for erratic driving. It turns out a child was at the wheel of their pickup truck, and their 11-month-old baby was in the vehicle as well.
The 9-year-old driver was headed toward a river when cops found them, according to WGN TV. Roth and Eggert had blood alcohol levels twice the legal limit at the scene. In a very misguided attempt to get home safely, the couple had asked the little girl to chauffeur them home.
Eggert was so intoxicated that she also assaulted paramedics who tried to help her treat a cut on her hand from an earlier incident.
Of course, this story is deeply sad. As the mother of a 7-year-old, I can only imagine how terrified the girl was as she attempted to drive the car with her very drunk mom and dad inside. Here's hoping these parents get the help they need, and that their daughter is cared for by an appropriate adult until they do.
