Fed-Up Parents Cancel Christmas

The Short of It

Lisa and John Henderson have canceled gift giving for their kids this Christmas. They initially made it a consequence for their kids' entitled behavior, but they also plan to teach their boys the true meaning of the holiday—that it's not all about stuff.

The Lowdown

Lisa Henderson explained on her blog, Over the Big Moon, that after months of working on their sons' negative behavior, the Hendersons are cancelling gift giving as a last ditch effort.

"John and I feel like we are fighting a very hard uphill battle with our kids when it comes to entitlement. Our kids have been acting so ungrateful lately. They expect so much even when their behavior is extremely disrespectful. We gave them good warning, either it was time for their behavior to change, or there would be consequences. We patiently worked with them for several months and guess what, very little changed. One day after a particularly bad display of entitlement John said, 'We should just cancel Christmas.' And, so that's what we did," Lisa wrote.

The Hendersons feel that this is a perfect moment to teach their boys the importance of giving to others in need; the joy in the act of giving; and to think of others more than themselves. Lisa and John won't be giving each other presents this year either.

Lisa clarified on her blog that the family is still celebrating the birth of the savior, putting up decorations and partaking in all their other traditional celebrations.

The Upshot

This time of year is the perfect opportunity to teach our children about giving. Our kids really love to receive gifts (who doesn't like new stuff), but we should teach them to also give throughout the year to the less fortunate. My family has had this conversation many times, and I truly think that next year, the Henderson boys will be more appreciative for what they do receive.
