The Short of It
Good news for little Latina girls everywhere! Yesterday, Disney Junior announced that its first Latina princess, Elena of Avalor, will make her debut in 2016 on a special episode of "Sofia the First," and then she'll star in her own spin-off series, "Elena of Avalor."
The network said of the new Latina princess: "Elena is a confident and compassionate teenager in an enchanted fairy tale kingdom inspired by diverse Latin cultures and folklore."
Dominican born actress, Aimee, of ABC Family's "Young & Hungry," will be the voice of Elena. Elena's backstory is connected to the magical amulet Sofia wears.
The story reveals that decades ago Elena was imprisoned in the amulet by an evil sorceress named Shuriki while trying to protect her little sister, Princess Isabel. Sofia "discovers the truth...and sets out to restore Elena to her human form and help her return to the kingdom of Avalor."
Sofia the First was supposed to be the first Latina Disney Princess, but she doesn't look like what most expect Latinas to look like. I'm a Latina. She wasn't easily identifiable to me as being of Hispanic heritage, but in truth, Sofia looks a lot like my daughters, who look like their father. My girls have alabaster skin, blue eyes and blonde hair. I have dark hair, dark almond eyes and olive skin. Granted, Latinas come in all sizes, shapes and colors. Elena will fill the need for a more traditional looking Latina princess with dark hair, brown eyes and olive skin. We're very excited for Elena to make her debut.
