Model Rachael Finch Defends Choice to Spend Every Weekend Without Her Daughter

The Short of It

Would you send your child away every weekend for the entire weekend? This mom does!

The Lowdown

Australian model Rachael Finch recently revealed in an interview with The Daily Telegraph that her 2-year-old daughter, Violet, goes to her grandparents' house every weekend so she and her husband, Michael Miziner, can have the time all to themselves.

That's Every. Single. Weekend.

"I think it's incredibly healthy for the relationship," the model mama said.

The backlash on social media was harsh and swift. "Maybe she should adopt the child to someone who will love her unconditionally," wrote one commenter. "Not just Monday afternoon to Friday morning. So sad."

"Why even have a child if you can't handle them on the weekends as well?!?!," asked another. "I don't understand some people pawning off their children every chance they can. Sure it's healthy to get time away, but every weekend, all weekend is absurd."

But the Miss Universe contender isn't letting the haters get her down, and she defended her decision in a recent post on Instagram: "A Mother should never be made to feel they are not good enough for their child when they are doing everything they can to keep them safe, happy and loved. Only the parents of a child truly know what is best and should always have faith in their decisions. I value dearly the relationship Violet has with her Grandmother and I believe this is one of the most important and influential relationships growing up. I work hard so that I can provide the best future for the amazing soul we have created. I won't ever stop believing in her or the strength of the family unit."

The Upshot

I have vivid memories of spending every Sunday with my grandfather when I was little. He was an artist, and I'd sit next to him for hours, watching in awe as he'd sketch with his charcoals. I wouldn't trade that time for the world.

In fact, I now do the same thing with my own kids and my mom—they go to hang with her every Sunday. And it's a win-win all around: My husband and I get time alone, my kids get to experience fun new things away from the nest, and my mom gets her grandkids' undivided attention for the afternoon.

I get that a few hours on a Sunday is not the same thing as an entire weekend, but who are we to judge? Every parent is entitled to do what's best for his or her own family. So let's all take a moment to stand back and view time spent with grandparents for what it really is—an amazing gift.
