Mom Arrested for Abuse and Publicly Shaming Child with T-shirt

Hernandez County Detention Center

The Short of It

What's the craziest thing you've ever done to motivate your child to get good grades? One Florida mom, Melany Joyce Alexander, went too far when she allegedly beat her daughter for getting bad grades and then, as if the abuse was not enough, sent her to middle school wearing a T-shirt that said, in handwritten text, that she had gotten a "good woopin."

The Lowdown

Alexander, 31, was arrested and is facing child abuse charges after beating her daughter with a belt and then publicly shaming her by forcing her to wear a humiliating shirt to school. The shirt said this:

"My name is (word removed) I currently have all F's in all of my classes. I am not aloud to have a boyfriend no time soon. So back off before I get another good woopin like I got last night. Also I can no longer have ANY friends until ALL of my F's are ALL brought up to C's and up!!! So unless you are helping me with this goal... BACK OFF!!! My eating french fries & being a social butterfly is over because I know why my parents send me to school. I now know the education. I will learn. I will listen to my teachers and be respectful, at all times. I will do these things because I am failing (word removed) due to my social life. Want to be my friend :) Help me by not!!!"

Thankfully, the school officials gave the girl a different, more appropriate, shirt to wear.

The Upshot

Deputies say the girl had numerous bruises and belt marks from her shoulders down to her wrists. The Department of Children and Families said the bruises and marks were excessive.

Personally, I've always preferred to encourage my girls to get good grades by using positive reinforcement. It seems to make more sense to incentivize my children to want to do well than to punish them for not doing well, and I don't know how humiliation can ever do anything but harm a child.
