Mom Regrets Skipping Whooping Cough Vaccine after Baby is Hospitalized

The Short of It

An Australian mom, who came down with whooping cough during the last few weeks of her pregnancy and passed it on to her newborn daughter, is now sharing the devastating consequences of her decision to decline the vaccine.

The Lowdown

In a video shared by Gold Coast Health on Facebook, the new mother shares her story about not getting vaccinated: "My name is Cormit, and this is Eva," she begins. "And unfortunately, we've been in the hospital for three weeks. Eva was diagnosed with whooping cough, pertussis, and it's been a nightmare."

She then goes on to admit that as a healthy, fit, pregnant woman, who ate well, went to the gym every day, and had no complications, she opted to forgo the whopping cough vaccine: "I told them to leave me alone. I don't need this crap."

Turns out, she did.

The self-described "bulletproof woman" contracted whooping cough without realizing it. Even worse, shortly after giving birth and being diagnosed, little Eva started displaying symptoms, although they were mild at first.

"She was just a bit nasally and coughy for the first few days," Cornit explains.

But within two weeks, Eva's cough "became pretty scary," Cornit says. "Horror movie. To the point of turning blue, flopping in my hands, can't breathe, running into hospital."

In other words, every parent's worst nightmare. Eva was admitted to the intensive care unit four weeks ago, and she's still there.

"It's a lot of suffering for a tiny, cute, little thing that you love so much," Cornit says. "She's my only child and my first. And if I could turn back time, I would protect myself."

'If I could turn back time I would protect myself.' Cormit's baby has contracted Whooping Cough. The Upshot

My heart goes out to Cornit. I know some parents are weary of vaccines. But this mom's anguish and regret is all too real, and her story only underscores the fact that no matter how "healthy" we may look and feel on the outside, our bodies can still betray us.

Whooping cough is serious business, especially for newborns. And according to the CDC, the vaccine is more than safe. I think this story should serve as an important reminder that by being vaccinated, you're not only protecting yourself, but also your unborn child.
