The Short of It
Judy Blume has a new novel, "In the Unlikely Event," coming out in the summer of 2015. Unlike her other bestsellers, this book will not be for children or young adults but for adults like you and me. I'm so excited. I grew up reading her books.
Obviously, Judy Blume is best known for the books of our youth like "Freckle Face" and my personal favorite, "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret." Well, she's returning to the adult genre after a 16-year hiatus with her long-awaited book, "In the Unlikely Event."
The fictional tale is centered on a real-life series of airplane crashes that occurred in Elizabeth, N.J., over the course of a few months between 1951-1952.
Judy Blume was just a teenager when the crashes happened, but she remembers the chaos and incomprehension of what was happening. As a teen, she wondered if the world was being invaded by aliens from another planet or if the flights were sabotaged. She remembers being terrified. There were, and still are, a lot of unanswered questions surrounding those events.
But don't expect Blume to focus strictly on the plane crashes, as always, the focus will be on the characters and the humanity of the situation. The synopsis on the Knopf Doubleday Publishing website promises readers will follow characters as they cope "not only with grief but with first love, estranged parents, difficult friendships, familial obligations, divorce, career ambitions, a grandparent's love, a widower's hope, and everything in between."
"In the Unlikely Event" will be available just in time for me to read poolside this summer, just like I did when I was a kid reading, "Are You there God? It's Me, Margaret."
