The Short of It
An Iowa news anchor is fighting back after people posted snarky comments about her "real mom moment."
New mother and anchorwoman Erin Kiernan was recently introduced to one of the most frustrating baby stages: teething. She took to her Facebook page after a particularly brutal, sleepless night with her 6-month-old, and shared an unfiltered selfie along with this caption: "I used to think I knew what exhausted was. Hilarious."

Most of the comments to her post were positive, in the "been there, can relate, I feel your pain" vein. One commenter wrote, "Thank you for sharing this REAL MOM moment!" Another wrote, "On behalf of all moms everywhere--THANK YOU for posting this and keeping it real!"
But some comments were just downright mean, making fun of her no-makeup, hair pulled back look. "This doesn't even look like the same person!" one viewer said.

"I just kind of lost it. And then I thought, this is ridiculous, I am not this object that people see on TV all the time," Kiernan told Today.com about seeing that nasty comment, and others.
Then, instead of hiding from her haters, she posted a side-by-side comparison of her "real mom moment" and how she looks when she's camera ready.
Along with the photos, she wrote:
"Snarky message...'This doesn't even look like the same person!' Etc, etc...mean, nasty, hateful comments...Newsflash! These ARE NOT pictures of the same person. The woman on the left is well rested, spent two hours on her hair and makeup, had a professional photographer take her picture (and photoshop it, I'm sure), and is in the 'glowing' second trimester of pregnancy. The woman on the right got two hours of sleep (maybe), hadn't looked in the mirror, took a selfie, did not put a filter on it and is covered with spit up and drool from a teething and very crabby baby. You are an idiot if you think these are pictures of the same woman."
The side-by-side photo post has been liked over 13,000 times. And although the response has been very positive, Kiernan says it is very out of character for her, and can best be attributed to sleep deprivation.

Still, she hopes her story will help other moms who find themselves at the end of their ropes. "Whether you're a mother or not, just as women, as people, a lot of times we feel that life is hard. No one's life is this shiny, perfect existence," Kiernan said.
What I love about this mom's response to her "haters" is that she confronted it head-on, instead of letting their mean comments pull her down, which from my experience, is very easy to do. So on behalf of every mom who has been bullied online for just being honest about her experience and feelings, thank you, Erin.
