The Short of It
The poignant lyrics from Rachel Platten's hit "Fight Song" — "This is my fight song/take back my life song" — have become something of an anthem for Jeremiah Succar, a 7-year-old who is battling stage-four atypical rhabdoid teratoid, an aggressive, fast-growing tumor in the brain and spinal cord, at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles. He has committed the lyrics to memory—and recently and got the change to sing the inspiring song with Platten herself.
Jeremiah's dad, Jerry Succar, wrote on the hospital's blog that his son "used to sing it when he got a lot of headaches, but now he sings it in the morning, before bed and during shots he has to get." When Platten found out about her young fan through a Twitter campaign, she surprised Jeremiah with a bedside visit. She sang an acoustic rendition of the boy's anthem that quickly turned into a most perfect duet that is going viral. Jeremiah wowed me with his beautiful singing— and spirit.
Music can be healing, and it was wonderful to see this busy singer take time out of her day to visit the hospital and lift a young fan's spirits. As a cancer survivor myself, it's wonderful to see sick children fighting the good fight and not giving up. We wish Jeremiah a speedy recovery.
