Thanks to Social Media, Autistic Teen Gets Amazing Birthday Do-Over

The Short of It

When Hallee Sorenson turned 18 last year, no one came to her birthday party. Now, thanks to her cousin, complete strangers from around the world are flooding her mailbox to give her a 19th birthday to remember.

The Lowdown

Hallee's cousin, Rebecca Prefontaine, wrote a Facebook post to share the story of her "amazing" cousin, who, she explained, just happens to have autism.

"She lights up a room with her smile," Prefontaine wrote. "Hallee is funny, sweet, caring, smart, an athlete, a jigsaw puzzle champion, a wonderful student, and a best friend to all."

She also wrote that Sorenson was "heartbroken" at her party last year and shared a photo of her celebrating alone. "Below is a picture of Hallee last year at her 18th birthday party," Prefontaine explained. "She had been so excited to have a party with her friends. Invitations went out to her classmates at school and to other friends in the area. Hallee sat at her party anxiously waiting for her friends to arrive so they could have fun....but Hallee's friends would never arrive. Not a single one."

So heartbreaking!

Which is why, in her post, Prefontaine asked Facebook users to flood Hallee's mailbox with cards for her birthday on July 2 this year. "Hal loves getting mail," she wrote. "This would be the best birthday gift she could ask for."

The Upshot

It's only been a little over a week since Rebecca wrote about Hallee on Facebook, and the post has since been shared more than 235,000 times! Hallee has already received tons of cards and flowers, and there's even a Facebook page called Hallee's 19th Birthday that was created just for sharing pictures of them!
