The Short of It
An Iowa woman gave birth to a healthy, full-term baby in the shower. She believed she was only 12 weeks along at the time of the miraculous arrival of her aptly named daughter, Miracle.
Brittany Young thought she had around six months to go before her fourth child was due. But when stomach pains quickly turned into the urge to push, the mom was in for a big surprise.
In the shower of her Des Moines home, Young delivered a full-term baby.
"This baby's eyes were open; she was just sitting there staring at me. She didn't cry or anything. I was in shock. I was like, there's a baby here," Young told the Des Moines Register.
The "dazed" mom called to a friend, who was sitting in another room, for help. Paramedics arrived to witness a shocking scene: Young was still sitting in the shower, as her friend held the newborn with the umbilical cord attached.
The new mom-of-four, whose three other children range in ages from 1 to 4, chose to name the baby Miracle because she believes her daugher's healthy birth is just that.
So how did Young not know she was so far along?
The Des Moines Register reports that the mom had recently moved to the area, likely to escape an abusive relationship. During a hospital visit for a broken nose, Young learned she was pregnant, but she misunderstood when she was told she had 12 weeks left in her pregnancy. She thought she was just 12 weeks into the gestation. Young's medical paperwork is unclear.
Although Miracle's arrival was a huge shock, the mom now says the baby's siblings are excited to have a new sister.
"I'm happy that she's here," Young said.
