Best-Selling Author: J.K. Rowling
J.K. Rowling, best-selling author of the Harry Potter series, has said she is prouder of her years as a single mother than of any other part of her life, including the Potter franchise. She is also president of Gingerbread, a charity that assists single parents, with which the writer aims to end the stigmatization—after being ostracized herself as an unmarried mother.
Single Dad Next Door: Greg Wickherst
You may not know this single dad, but he's a big deal to his 3-year-old daughter Izzy. When Wickherst and the child's mom split, he realized he wasn't the best at...doing his daughter's hair. He didn't wave the white flag. Instead, he asked cosmetology students for a few pointers. He told ABC news that after meeting with the students and working alongside them, he learned a bunch of different styles and wowed his little girl with braids and buns galore.
Celebrated Single Mom Blogger: Rachel Sarah
Author of "Single Mom Seeking," Sarah has been blogging about single motherhood for more than a decade. Her witty and candid blogs are filled with tips, tricks and dating advice. If that isn't enough to inspire us, Sarah got her happy ending—marrying the man of her dreams and adding a second daughter to her family. Today she is raising a teen and toddler! Read about her marriage and step-dad jitters on The New York Times Motherlode blog.
Actress: Bridget Moynahan
New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and Moynahan dated for three years and then found themselves in a very complicated situation: She was three months pregnant, but they were no longer together. In 2008, Moynahan told Harper's Bazaar: "Going through that traumatic time of being heartbroken and then being pregnant turned my whole life upside down and inside out and just knocked the wind out of me." Her honesty inspired single moms to feel their pain, anger and heartache—and let it go. Today, she's happily co-parenting her son with Brady and his supermodel wife Gisele, proving blended families can get along. Go team!
Super Single Dad: Matt Logelin
In 2008 Matt and his wife, Liz, gave birth to a gorgeous baby girl, who they named Madeline. Twenty-seven hours later, Liz died suddenly and Matt became a widower and single dad in a split second. Matt blogged his way through his grief and is The New York Time's best-selling author of "Two Kisses for Maddy."
Choice Mom: Louise Sloan
Editor and writer Louise Sloan is the single mom of an 8-year-old boy and the author of "Knock Yourself Up," a memoir and report on choosing single motherhood. Sloan has been editor-in-chief of the custom content divisions at major mass-market magazine publishers, including Gruner + Jahr USA Publishing and American Express Publishing. She has produced original content for clients like Target, Nordstrom, GlaxoSmithKline and Dr. Phil. This savvy single mom recently launched SingleWith.com, a modern website destination for single parents featuring personal essays, style guides, advice and more.
Singer: Kimberly Henderson
This single mother who recently auditioned for "American Idol" and "The Voice," believed that her single mom story resonated with people (her original video on Facebook has tens of millions of views, so we agree). Being a teen mom proved to be a poignant and humbling experience for Henderson. At 16, the Sumter, S.C., native became pregnant by her high school sweetheart. They wed and kept the baby. But, 10 years and four kids later, she's divorced and a single mom. Instead of giving up on her dream of becoming a known singer, Henderson worked her way to the top of the iTunes singer-songwriter chart. At 27, her single, "Tiny Hearts," is heard around the world.
