In his children’s book debut, fine artist Alex Beard brings to life an African savanna filled with humor and misunderstandings. When Bird mixes up something Turtle says, he accidentally starts a rumor about the watering hole drying up. One misunderstanding leads to another, with animals making their own hilarious assumptions. No one is hearing anything right, and soon the animals are in an uproar from one end of the jungle to the other. Elephant is trumpeting, Croc , and soon the animals are in an uproar from one end of the jungle to the other. Elephant is trumpeting, Croc is snapping, and the Flamingos are fleeing! Beard’s story will have every child wondering if peace can ever be restored in the animal kingdom. Alex Beard has two galleries, one in New Orleans and the other in New York City. Along with his paintings and prints, he has created a line of puzzles that was launched through national accounts in fall 2008 and spring 2009. Puzzles based on The Jungle Grapevine will be launched in conjunction with this book in fall 2009.F&P level: LF&P genre: FBook Details:Format: HardcoverPublication Date: 9/1/2009Pages: Reading Level: Age 4 and Up… read more

The Jungle Book (1894) is a collection of stories by English author Rudyard Kipling. The stories were first published in magazines... in 1893–94. The tales in the book (and also those in The Second Jungle Book which followed in 1895, and which includes five further stories about Mowgli) are fables, using animals in an anthropomorphic manner to give moral lessons. The verses of The Law of the Jungle, for example, lay down rules for the safety of individuals, families and communities. Kipling put in them nearly everything he knew or ”heard or dreamed about the Indian jungle.” Other readers have interpreted the work as allegories of the politics and society of the time. The best-known of them are the three stories revolving around the adventures of an abandoned ”man cub” Mowgli who is raised by wolves in the Indian jungle. The most famous of the other four stories are probably ”Rikki-Tikki-Tavi”, the story of a heroic mongoose, and ”Toomai of the Elephants”, the tale of a young elephant-handler. As with much of Kipling’s work, each of the stories is preceded by a piece of verse, and succeeded by another. read more
Mowgli movie fans will fall in love with this beautifully illustrated classic!Since its inception in 1894, The Jungle Book has enc...hanted readers―both young and old―with its invaluable moral lessons. By bestowing the animals in the stories with human traits, famed writer Rudyard Kipling gives readers timeless parables that teach family values and the importance of community. The most popular of these tales center on Mowgli, a young boy who lives in the jungle amongst a community of animals. All before reaching his teenage years, he is brought up by wolves, trained by a bear, kidnapped by monkeys, and much more. This collection also features other classic stories, most notably “Rikki Tikki Tavi,” a story of a young mongoose named Rikki, who serves as a protector from dangerous cobras for a British family residing in India. In this masterful tale, the young mongoose is forced into a ferocious battle with Nagaina, a large venomous cobra threatening Rikki’s family and seeking revenge for the death of her counterpart, Nag. These stories, with their vibrant characters and important moral lessons, have stood the test of time, having been reprinted in hundreds of different versions and languages around the world.Between the First and Second Jungle Books, this volume contains every single original Mowgli story. Featuring stunning, all-new illustrations by renowned artist Ángel Domínguez, this version of Kipling’s masterpiece is a beautiful edition sure to continue to educate and inspire readers for decades to come. read more
