Even before it gets light, they are wide awake. Squirrels eat seeds, buds, berries, flowers, insects, snails, acorns and nuts. Squirrels keep a reserve of nuts and acorns for the winter. The wisent can be found there only in small groups as a herd animal. A typical herd size is 12 to 20 animals. These consist of cows and young animals. Bulls that are sexually mature stay with the herd only during the rutting season. The American Bison is the nearest relative to the wisent, and they can be crossbred without problems. The wisent was in acute danger of extinction during the 1920S. The last wild wisent was shot in the Caucasus in 1927. All wisents to be found today are descended from only 12 wisents cared for in zoos and vivarium's. read more
