Studies in the 1950s revealed that young children hospitalized without their parents respond first by crying for them, then by showing signs of despair, and finally by emotionally detaching from the parents and acting indifferent to their absence. This detachment is hard to repair and highly detrimental to a child's development-most children who feel they cannot rely on their parents grow up to become more emotionally insecure and less self-assured than their peers.nnot rely on their parents grow up to become more emotionally insecure and less self-assured than their peers. The Attachment Connection sorts out the facts from the fiction about parent-child attachment and shows how paying attention to the emotional needs of your child, particularly during the first five years of development, can help him or her grow up happy, secure, and confident. Winter weather is hastily headed this way, and the frigid temps have already arrived. Brrr! Now is the time to make sure your kiddo has the best snow boots this season to keep their tiny tootsies toasty and dry.
It's also essential to choose the correct size advises Dr. Velimir Petkov, Medical Director of Premier Podiatry. "When shopping for children's snow boots, you should choose boots that are half a size to a size larger than your child's foot size to allow room for thick socks. Our feet and hands tend to be the first body parts to get cold, so proper insulation is key," says Dr. Petkov. "One of the main concerns when walking or playing outside in the snow is falling. Foot and ankle injuries are extremely common in the cold months. Make sure that you select soles constructed of rubber that provide a good grip when confronted with moisture."

You gotta catch 'em all! The highly anticipated live action film, Pokémon Detective Pikachu hits theaters on May 10th, and fans are already eager to get their hands on movie merchandise. But what keeps kids and parents so passionate about the famous Japanese characters? "The ever-expanding Pokémon franchise has been a beacon for kids and kids at heart since the original video games launched more than 20 years ago," says J.C. Smith, Senior Director of Consumer Marketing of The Pokémon Company International. "Since its introduction, the beloved animation series, the ever-popular Pokémon Trading Card Game, Pokémon GO and a wide variety of video games and apps have offered fans a variety of ways to engage with our iconic collection of Pokémon like Pikachu. With its family-friendly messages of sportsmanship, friendship and community, Pokémon is a brand that parents know and trust."
It is this reason that longtime gaming fans and new Pokémon lovers are buzzing about the soon-to-be-released feature film. "Pokémon is on the same level as Super Mario Bros. and Pac-Man," adds James Zahn, Toy Expert and Senior Editor of The Pop Insider. When that first trailer hit, audiences could see exactly why he's perfect for the part. It's so absurd that it's genius. This will be a great chance for parents and kids to connect at the movies." And for those die-hard fans, we've rounded up the latest Pokémon launches and hot-sellers that will soon be flying off store shelves. We guarantee that super-sleuth Pikachu fans won't have to search hard to find these fun pieces!
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics Childhood Sleep Guidelines, infants should sleep between 12 to 16 hours, while growing toddlers should grab between 11 to 14 hours of shut-eye. That's why picking the perfect crib mattress is key for a good night (and naptime) slumber for your little lamb.
While there are several factors to consider when choosing a crib mattress and setting up a safe sleep environment for your child. Parents should select "a firm mattress that is made for the crib, meaning perfect in size with a tight-fitting sheet," suggests S. Daniel Ganjian, MD, a pediatrician at Providence Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California. "There should be no space between the mattress and the sides of the crib."
And other than a fitted sheet, there shouldn't be anything in the baby's bed, particularly during the first year. "The most common mistake that parents make is putting something in the crib besides a tightly swaddled baby," says Gina Posner, MD, a pediatrician at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, CA. "There should be no stuffed animals, no crib bumpers and no sleep positioners. Just make sure it is a new crib that is up to current standards."
Dr. Ganjian also advises against using an old crib and mattress. "Hand me downs used to be great, but now you really have to watch out for them, since many have been recalled or are dangerous because there is some subtle defect that you might not be aware of."
In celebration of Sleep Awareness Week, we've rounded up our top picks of comfy, crib mattresses with quality features to ensure that tired newborns and tots transitioning to a toddler bed sleep like babies so Mom and Dad can rest a whole lot easier.
