From the introduction:We give all sorts of things an extra layer of meaning, a symbolic meaning. A white bird in a painting is a d...ove, but it's also a symbol of peace. Since peace is an idea, it can t be drawn directly, so artists have found a way to convey that idea with a picture of a white bird. In Tibet, carpets and other fabrics are decorated with monsters, birds, flowers, and designs. The designs don t have a symbolic meaning, but the dragons and cranes and lotus blossoms each carry a special meaning, like the dove. We've chosen twenty-two Tibetan objects from the collection of the Newark Museum, each of them covered with pictures, for you to color. They are shown as small reproductions on the inside front and back covers. The captions on the pages that follow tell you something about Tibetan symbolism. The last page of this book is blank so that you can draw and color your own picture. The Japanese woodblock artist Katsushika Hokusai, who lived from 1760 to 1849, had a great influence on many European artists, in ...particular the Impressionist painters Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Hokusai started sketching when he was five or six years old, and he became an apprentice wood engraver at the age of fourteen. At eighteen, he went to work in a master artist's studio, and a year later he published his first prints. Even though Hokusai had a very long career as an artist, he wrote that it wasn t until the age of seventy-two that he 'finally apprehended something of the true quality of birds, animals, insects, fish, and of the vital nature of grasses and trees.' The woodblocks included in this coloring book are mostly from two untitled series of Hokusai's prints called Large Flowers and Small Flowers.Pomegranate's Hokusai coloring book is 8 1/2 x 11 inches and features 22 drawings based on floral woodblock prints (48 pages total). Soft cover book with staple binding. 48 pages with 22 images to color. Size: 8½ x 11 in. Coloring pages are blank on the back so t...hey can be cut out and displayed.Artist Gustave Baumann (American, b. Germany, 1881 1971) immigrated with his family to the United States from Germany when he was ten years old. At the age of sixteen he began full-time work in a commercial engraving house and took night classes in drawing at the Art Institute of Chicago to, in his words, get a little closer to art. Baumann began work at an advertising studio and by 1903 had opened his own studio. As soon as he had saved one thousand dollars from the new business, Baumann gave one half of the earnings to his mother and used the other half to travel to Munich to enroll in the School of Arts and Crafts located there. At the time, Munich printmakers were producing bold, innovative designs, which so deeply impressed Baumann that they influenced his work throughout his life. In rural Indiana, New York, New England, and the Southwest (where he lived for fifty years), he produced work that portrayed the spirit of his surroundings with respect and deep affection. You ll find 22 of Gustave Baumann s artworks in this coloring book. Pomegranate's Quilts coloring book features 22 quilt patterns from the collection of the American Folk Art Museum. Book is 8.5 x 1...1 inches, 48 pages with twenty-two images to color. Coloring pages are blank on the back so they can be cut out and displayed. Each illustration is reproduced in a small, color version of the original artwork and as a full-page black line drawing. Published by PomegranateKids, an imprint of Pomegranate Communications. This item is CPSIA compliant.Excerpt from the Introduction:Maybe you've had the pleasure of taking a nap under a patchwork quilt, enjoying its bright colors and dazzling patterns as well as its warmth. Quilts are often made by piecing together cloth shapes to create a quilt top, adding warm cotton batting and a backing cloth, and then sewing the three layers together with decorative needlework. This technique of piecing together bits of cloth allows for an almost endless variety of colors and patterns and often produces stunning designs. Most of the quilts in this coloring book were made by women in the eastern and midwestern United States sometime between the mid-1800s and mid-1900s. As you color in the outlines, take a moment to think about the women who stitched these quilts with love, precision, and creativity. Their intention was to protect their families from the winter chill and delight them at the same time. The 22 quilts in this coloring book are shown as small pictures on the inside front and back covers. You might want to copy the original colors, or you might decide to use your own. We've left the last page of the book blank so that you can design and color a quilt of your own. read more

Pomegranate's Hiroshige s Flowers coloring book features 22 works of art by the famed Japanese printmaker. The 48 page 8 1/2 x 11 ...in. book contains 22 coloring pages that are blank on the back so they can be cut out and displayed. Each illustration is reproduced in a small, color version of the original artwork and as a full-page black line drawing. Hiroshige II, who lived from 1826 to 1869, was a student of the top designer of Japanese landscape prints, Hiroshige I. After his teacher died in 1858, he inherited the famous name and carried on the artistic tradition. The twenty-two pictures in this coloring book are from his print series Thirty-six Selected Flowers, designed in 1866. In this series, Hiroshige II cleverly combines two different subjects in each print. First, he shows a close-up view of beautiful flowers. Then, in the distance behind the flowers, he shows a landscape scene of the place where the flowers grow, somewhere in his home city of Tokyo. However, the name 'Tokyo' did not become official until two years later, in 1868. In the titles of the prints, the artist sometimes calls his city by the new name Tokyo and sometimes by an old name that means 'Eastern Capital.'Today some of the gardens shown in the prints have been replaced by tall buildings. But since many people in Japan love flowers, some of the old gardens in Tokyo are still there, and there are new parks and gardens too.Japanese gardeners developed many different varieties of flowers. When you color the pictures, you can follow the colors used in the prints or invent some new varieties of your own. The last page of the book is blank, for you to draw your own favorite flower and show where it grows. A garden? A park? A pot inside a house? Or maybe it is a wildflower that grows in the woods or mountains. read more

Norman Rockwell was an American painter who lived from 1894 to 1978. Have you ever heard the expression 'A picture is worth a thou...sand words'? You'll find out more and more about the people he painted--where they live, what they like to do, and what kind of trouble they get into--the longer you gaze at the pictures. You can even imagine what they are thinking! From 1916 to 1962, Norman Rockwell created the 22 paintings in this book to be covers of a magazine called The Saturday Evening Post. His minimalist approach did not reduce the impact of his art; instead, it offered a bold and unique interpretation of the world around him.Born in rural West Virginia, Harper (1922 2007) was always drawn to nature; as a boy he would traipse across the local hills, sketchbook in hand, stopping to draw whatever seized his attention. Studies at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and the Art Students League of New York led him to his unmistakable style, refined during his long and noteworthy art career spent largely in Ohio. Several creatures in this coloring book are from the 1991 poster he created for the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes (Cleveland), in celebration of the area s wildlife and the Nature Center s many years of serendipity in the suburbs. Inside are twenty-two pages of Harper s playful critters, with reproductions of his full-color illustrations on the inside of the front and back covers. We ve also included a blank page at the end so you, like Harper, can sketch the world around you. read more

Instead of painting the usual illustrations of historical events or grand portraits of kings and queens, they set out to capture moments from everyday life. Their paintings often showed shopkeepers, neighbors, friends, and family members going about their daily routines, or just scenes of simple natural beauty such as a glimmering river or a sunset over the sea. Also, these artists didn t try to produce an exact copy of what they saw. Instead, they tried to record with bold colors and visible brushstrokes the feeling of a scene their impression of it (which is how they came to be called Impressionists ).This coloring book features sixteen paintings by famous Impressionist artists. All of the paintings include bodies of water: boats skimming along sun-dappled rivers, houses by the sea, a beautiful lily pond (painted by Claude Monet in his own backyard!). The original paintings are shown as small pictures on the inside front and back covers. When you color in these pictures, you can either try to copy the original colors and style or come up with your own. We ve also included some blank pages, so you can create your own works of art. You might try going outside, as the Impressionists did, and coloring the light, shadows, and reflections you see! read more
