Excerpt from Old Wonder-Eyes: And Other Stories for ChildrenMinnie was a sweet, gentle little girl, who loved everybody, and every... creature that God had made - and everybody and every crea ture she met loved her. Rough people were gentle to her, and cross people were kindly; she could go straight up to vicious horses, and fierce dogs, and spiteful cats, and they would become quiet and mild directly. I don't think that anything could resist her loving ways, unless it were a mad bull or a setting-hen.One night, as Minnie lay awake in her bed, in the nursery, listening to a summer rain, she heard a strange fluttering and scratching in the chimney, and she called to her nurse, and said.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Pura (pronounced poor-ah) Vida (pronounced veed-ah) literally translates to Pure Life. Mae (pronounced my) is Costa Rican slang fo...r friend or pal (like our "dude"). Pura Vida Mae is the story of a serene and mellow young iguana by the name of Daniel who enjoys living his life and relaxing in the sunshine. As he goes about his day, he learns that a great many other animals in the jungle do not share his fondness for a laid-back life. Some of these animals question him, and others simply go about their business. Daniel does have some very nice friends, though, and they share his love for an uncomplicated life of peace. His friends do not all look like he does, but they do have a great deal in common. Daniel can be himself with his friends, and they love each other for that. The message of this story is to love yourself and each other for who you are. I intend for this story to teach that gentle lesson. I began to write Pura Vida Mae after my first visit to Costa Rica, where I fell in love with everything about this amazing country. This place made a huge impression on me as a nature and wildlife enthusiast and conservationist as well as an artist; the love of life in all of its forms so apparent here. "Pura Vida" is the national greeting of the Costa Rican people. It means everything from "hello" and "nice day" to "good-bye" and "safe trip." Buffie Biddle is an artist, a writer, a lover of nature and wildlife, a conservationist, an educator (formerly) and an aunt (to two amazing boys). She graduated with a degree in fine arts, minoring in special education. All of these things are contributing factors to her writing as well as her artwork. Buffie gets her greatest delight from being around wildlife. She enjoys watching animal behavior and loves all things that make each aspect of the natural world unique-each texture, shape, and color. From the very first experience Buffie had of Costa Rica (Tortuguero is her favorite place there as of yet), she felt constant joy at the presence of life there: flora, fauna, culture, life, warmth (not just the temperature, which is nice also), sights and sounds, even smells. She was inspired as an artist, and as a lover of the natural world and of people. Buffie worked with children for nearly twelve years. She addressed behavior needs, often focusing on socialization, specializing in children with autism and their siblings as well as potential friends. At times, Buffie's work with these students involved the use of stories and scripts tailor made to fit the individual child, focusing not only on his or her needs but also on his or her areas of interest. Making a lesson more interesting made treatment more enjoyable, successful and therapeutic for the student in the long run. Buffie applies this idea to her stories, of which Pura Vida Mae is the first completed. read more

Climb aboard the raft with Huck and Jim and drift away from the "sivilized" life and into a world of adventure, excitement, danger..., and self-discovery. Huck's shrewd and humorous narrative is complemented by lyrical descriptions of the Mississippi valley and a sparkling cast of memorable characters. The story basically follows the adventures of young Huckleberry Finn and a runaway slave named Jim. Finn is trying to escape has father and the efforts of the townspeople to civilize him while Jim is trying to escape slavery. There is a strong moral point to this book as Huck slowly learns to love Jim as a friend and not think of his skin color. Early on Huck is worried about helping a runaway slave and isn't sure what to do. Having been raised in Missouri, Huck has been taught that helping a slave run away is one of the worst sins imaginable and that African-Americans are pretty much worthless except as slaves. It takes a while for the truth to come to Huck but he finds that he is determined to help his friend get his freedom, no matter what. Huck ends up risking his own life to do just that. This book is a pure joy to read and I suggest you read it without looking for a political agenda. Just let the story flow and enjoy each word. This is a wonderful story, full of youthful innocence and backwoods charm. Just one little warning though, once you start reading you won't be able to put this book down. It is a pleasure to publish this new, high quality, and affordable edition of this timeless story. read more

Few books have so caught the imagination of the Orthodox community as Rabbi Paysach Krohn's Maggid series. One after another, they... have captivated readers and become as quoted as any publications in recent years. And now for the first time, these wonderful stories are presented for our children on their own level. Here are seventeen of the best stories in all the Maggid books. All kinds of stories, about great and ordinary people, children and adults, in situations that will grab our interest and hold it. When we put down this book (not an easy thing to do), we'll take warm memories with us. And we'll come back to read it again and again. Chaviva Krohn Pfeiffer has her father's knack for picking and telling a story. In this book, she picks some of the Maggid's best, and tells them beautifully. Norman Nodel pitches in with illustrations that are worthy of the stories. All in all, this is an irresistible book for children -- one of the best! read more

Excerpt from Stories for Children The younger boy laughed as he said, Well Ber tram, but nobody is afraid, then, I should think. O...h, yes, they are. I have known people afraid to go in a churchyard at night by themselves, to stay in a house or room by themselves, when it is dark, or walk home in lonely roads alone: those I call cowards. Then there are fellows who are afraid to do right for fear they should be laughed at, or afraid to speak the truth for fear they should be punished. Fear, in real danger, seems to me only a natural feeling given us to preserve our lives. I don't think that is cowardice. Well, then, I'm not a coward; for I don't believe I should be afraid of any of those sort of things, though I don't know that I was ever tried.
