Description: In 1978, the piping plover was listed as Threatened; in 1985, this was changed to Endangered. (ref. Committee on the ...Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada) Lake Diefenbaker in Saskatchewan, Canada is one of the largest nesting sites for piping plovers in North America. The South Saskatchewan River flows into this lake. In 2005, Piping Plovers were monitored along the South Saskatchewan River. There were 447 adults and 150 nests from Sask-Landing to Saskatoon. Heavy rains in Alberta caused flooding of many of these nests. Two hundred and forty six (246) viable eggs were collected from 75 piping plover nests. They were placed in an electric incubator. After hatching, chicks were hand-raised. The story of this rescue effort is told through photographs and text. Level 4 readers can master the text. Younger children will require assistance or enjoy having the story read to them. read more
