Los Angeles rock generally conjures memories of surf music, The Doors, or Laurel Canyon folkies. But punk? L.A.'s punk scene, whil...e not as notorious as that of New York City, emerged full-throated in 1977 and boasted bands like The Germs, X, and Black Flag. This book explores how, in the land of the Beach Boys, punk rock took hold.As a teenager, Dewar MacLeod witnessed firsthand the emergence of the punk subculture in Southern California. As a scholar, he here reveals the origins of an as-yet-uncharted revolution. Having combed countless fanzines and interviewed key participants, he shows how a marginal scene became a "mass subculture" that democratized performance art, and he captures the excitement and creativity of a neglected episode in rock history.Kids of the Black Hole tells how L.A. punk developed, fueled by youth unemployment and alienation, social conservatism, and the spare landscape of suburban sprawl communities; how it responded to the wider cultural influences of Southern California life, from freeways to architecture to getting high; and how L.A. punks borrowed from their New York and London forebears to create their own distinctive subculture. Along the way, MacLeod not only teases out the differences between the New York and L.A. scenes but also distinguishes between local styles, from Hollywood's avant-garde to Orange County's hardcore. With an intimate knowledge of bands, venues, and zines, MacLeod cuts to the heart of L.A. punk as no one has before. Told in lively prose that will satisfy fans, Kids of the Black Hole will also enlighten historians of American suburbia and of youth and popular culture. read more

Two teens, Marisela and Bobby, find themselves in an underground world with insects at war with giant worms. Along their journey, ...they confront huge centipedes, spiders and crickets. They also struggle with their own consciences and first love. It is a fantasy with many twists and turns (figuratively and literally) and surprises. The story is intended for pre-teens, but adults will enjoy it too!An excerpt to get an idea of the story:"Do you hear that?We both stood very still and listened. It was a low roar, but not like before. It wasnt coming from above and it wasnt cheering like from the auditorium.I swear, if I didnt know better, Id think it was horses! Then, I looked back and saw what it wasa herd of pill bugs moving up the path toward us. They must have been frightened into a kind of stampede. There must have been over fifty of them.I shouted to Marisela, Get to the side, quick! Our backs hugged the wall as they passed without any interest in us. Then, I had an idea. Here, start grabbing these vines. Tie them together and make em into a rope. Well hitch a ride! But . . . she started, how do we know where theyre going?!Well, its the way we were going, and besides, something is chasing them and it aint good!We tied sections of vine together into a kind of lasso. I remember doing this with rope, so I led. I twirled the vine over my head and let it go. The first throw slid off a bug.Try to get it over their antennae up front, maybe itll hang there, she yelled.Go girl! She twirled the makeshift lasso over her head with increasing speed, and then let it fly. The loop hooked over one antenna. She pulled the rope vine tight, but it slipped off.Try again! She retrieved the lasso, spun it quickly and threw it. This time, it hooked over both antennae and held firmly. Marisela was jolted forward and onto the side of a pill bug. I could see her struggle to get on top. Now, it was my turn again. This time, my vine rope landed over a bugs head and I too was jerked up onto its back. I could see Marisela several bugs in front as we galloped onward up the tunnel. The surface of the pill bug was like a hard, slick shell, so it was slippery even dry. We needed to get off to regain control over our direction." read more
This is a story about ten teenagers who spent lots of time together, enjoying the summer sun, swimming and exploring. It was one o...f those beautiful but strange days that no one understands. Maybe it was strange because of the weather. It was 106 degrees in the shade and the old people were saying that this heat was caused by dog days, and that they were just lasting too long, that the world was coming to an end, and that Jesus was coming back to judge everyone. The kids found a lovely watering hole on this day, and because it was so hot, they decided to go for a swim. This was such a beautiful and calm area, and since no one else was therethey claimed it, and called it their spot and they went there often. One day while swimming, one of the girls spotted something shining in the water that appeared to be the sun reflecting on a rock. After taking a closer look, she started to scream and everyone asked what was wrong. She said There is a body in the water. It was a dead lady. She was so beautiful, she had olive colored skin, she was wearing a white sequin dress with matching shoes and purse, and her hair was cut short with bangs. Her purse was opened, which revealed a compact engraved with Mary C. King and an address. There was also a small bottle of perfume inside. The police was called, and before the kids could turn around, the police and the coroner magically appeared. That day, these kids were plunged into a bizarre situation that demanded answers. read more

In the ballroom of a sparsely furnished Connecticut mansion, police find a shocking sight: four bodies lined up next to each other..., three teenagers and a middle-aged woman, each lying on a blanket, each shot once in the head. In an upstairs bedroom: an elderly woman and the family dog, both of them shot as well. The only person missing is the husband, father, son, and prime suspect, John Hartman, who's got a three-week jump on the police.Through the eyes of almost two dozen characters, including the neighbor who reports the crime, Hartman's mistress, a dogged state investigator, the family minister, and some of the characters Hartman meets on his escape route, we piece together not only what happened and how these shocking murders affect the community, but how John Hartman evades capture, where he's headed, and maybe even why he committed this gruesome crime in the first place.Based on the notorious John List murders and already compared to works by Norman Mailer and Russell Banks, DEVIL IN THE HOLE is gripping, literate, and haunting.Praise for DEVIL IN THE HOLE "DEVIL IN THE HOLE is powerful stuff. Drawing on real events, Salzberg has crafted a mesmerizing tale in many voices. He masterfully drip-feeds the compelling story, funneling moments from disparate, scattered lives to define the personality of a madman. The overall effect is like slowly opening a beautifully wrapped box of poisoned chocolates." Tim McLoughlin, editor Brooklyn Noir."Salzberg masterfully weaves together dozens of voices, including the killer's, in an effort to find out why a man would murder his entire family and then disappear. DEVIL IN THE HOLE is a haunting meditation on the thin, wavering line between sense and senselessness." Kaylie Jones, author Lies My Mother Never Told Me: A Memoir, and Speak Now"The devil isn't in the details, but in a tony Connecticut town. Charles Salzberg's DEVIL IN THE HOLE is a fine piece of crime writing and a hell of a fun read." Reed Farrel Coleman, three-time Shamus Award-winning author of Gun ChurchIn this smartly constructed crime novel, Salzberg uses multiple viewpoints to portray an unlikely killer who methodically slaughters his family an intriguing collage of impressions and personal perspectives for the reader to ponder. Publishers Weekly"Salzberg does an ingenious job of weaving together the various voices each distinct in its own right and giving us the story as told by the people who experienced it. It paints a psychological picture of a murderer, while also telling the story of those left in the aftermath and how they were affected as well. Brilliant and captivating storytelling." Erica Ruth Neubauer, Crimespree magazine"Salzberg has taken a true crime tale and made it into a compelling work of fiction that attempts to imagine the mind of a killer, not only through his own mind, but through the minds of many others. This is a novel which few readers will want to put down, turning pages mostly, I think, to find out how in the world the author pulls it off. 'How,' I kept asking myself, 'how can he finish this story?' The buildup becomes more and more absorbing because Charles Salzberg has a lot to say about human nature that is thought-provokingly wise and penetrating." Duff Brenna, South Carolina Review"I am typically not a fan of books written in this manner but Salzberg masterfully uses this technique to create a novel that is different in an extremely good way. The author effortlessly blends the different perspectives, viewpoints, and impressions of each character into a brilliant tapestry that envelops the reader, while peaking interest and the desire for more information about the crime. DEVIL IN THE HOLE is one of the best books that I have read this year and I most highly recommend it." Robin Thomas, New Mystery Review read more

A raw, unflinching, convention-defying memoir of substance abuse, depression, and guiltIn his genre-bending memoir, Rick Moody, au...thor of The Ice Storm, delves into not only his own tormenting struggle with depression and alcoholism but also the pathos inherent in American society. Beginning with his childhood and widening his gaze to his ancestral past, Moody elegantly details the events that led him to admit himself to a psychiatric hospital.Seeking explanations for his inner demons, Moody traces his lineage back to Joseph Handkerchief Moody. In early-eighteenth-century Maine, Joseph accidentally killed his childhood friend and wore a handkerchief over his face for the rest of his life as a self-imposed punishment. His story stirs within Moody a drive to understand his own failings through a study of American violence from colonial times to the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School. Remarkably broad in scope and full of Moodys witticisms and brilliantly crafted prose, The Black Veil is an extraordinary exploration of both personal and cultural shame that transcends the expectations of a memoir. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Rick Moody including rare images from the authors personal collection. read more
