5th grade students wrote this novel over the course of six months. Students were given an assignment to write a 20,000- 25,000 wor...d novel about a boy and a girl who need to go from their classroom to the office. Each room along the way should be a chapter that begins as characters enter the room and end 1,500-2,000 words later as the characters leave the room. Our ultimate goal was to create a plot that flows from one room to the next. My goal, as the teacher, was to develop an assignment where writing concepts would be encountered as they came up in the context of a meaningful project.I am extremely proud of my students. Their dedication to this project has more than advanced them to the next grade level; it has made them novelists before the age of twelve. This novel project took the 5th grade students seven months to complete. The project was to write a 25,000 word novel about a girl... and a boy who must go from their classroom to the office. Each room along the way is a chapter that begins as the girl and boy characters enter a room and will then end about 1,500 words later as they exit the room. The novel group's goal was to create a plot that smoothly transitioned from one room to the next. These students did an outstanding job on the novel project by extending and challenging their writing skills, learning to coexist with one another when times got rough, and learning what perseverance really is. These students are novelists before the 6th grade and they are all extremely proud of themselves. Please excuse their errors and let yourself be entertained by their efforts and dedication to their novel. I am Sharon Blake. I teach third grade at Bedford Elementary School in the beautiful mountains of Virginia. At the beginning of th...e 2010 school year, I wanted to create a writing project that would challenge my student's writing skills and allow them to use their imaginations. I introduced the class to Libby, a stuffed frog with personality. I explained to the class that Libby would be going home with each one of them to share in their weekend adventures. Each student was to write an entry in Libby's journal describing their adventures together. As the journal entries began to develop, Libby came alive. Each Monday a student brought her back and shared a brand new adventure with the class. Libby became a true member of our class and the students looked forward to their weekend with her. I was amazed at the work that came back each Monday. As I witnessed other students reading Libby's Journal, I saw my student's faces glow with pride. My students brought Libby to life. This book is a collection of her adventures. She has become a unique character with a loving personality who will live in my heart forever. I fell in love with Libby and I know you will too. I hope you enjoy reading about her adventures as much as my students enjoyed writing about them. Libby has developed into an intriguing character. 5th Grade students wrote this novel over the course of six months. Students were given an assignment to write a 25,000-word novel ...about a boy and a girl who need to go from their classroom to the office. Each room along the way should be a chapter that begins as the characters enter the room and ends about 1,500 words later as the characters leave the room. Please excuse their errors and enjoy their efforts because they enjoyed writing this novel more than filling out worksheets, studying weekly spelling words, and practicing for standardized tests.Did you ever have a crazy day at school? Read this book and your crazy day will seem like a picnic in the park. read more
