Kimo and Kalini: A Hawaiian Mouse Tail was inspired by a few things, including actual events. At around age nine, Jimbo’s younger ...daughter was an avid reader of the Poppy series of books about mice, written by the acclaimed author, Avi. While on vacation on Oahu, Hawaii, he spotted two little mice running around on the lava rock below the concrete barrier at the Halona Blowhole, which is not far from Koko Head and Marina Bay. The Halona Blowhole is also right next to a small beach known to locals as Cockroach Bay. One mouse was light brown in color, and the other was darker gray or brown. The idea of these two characters stayed in Jimbo's head until March of 2016. The rest of the story came to him after rescuing his older daughter's charm from a hotel drainpipe (without calling maintenance) while on a ski vacation with his girls. Please, enjoy reading with your children. read more

I have recently become passionate about using age-appropriate ways to teach young children mindfulness as a way for children to ha...ve some inner peace and inner safety despite their outer life circumstances. Mindfulness, put simply, is awareness in the present moment (noticing thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, feelings, and the surrounding environment in the moment instead of getting caught up in the thoughts and worries of past and future). Although many people are familiar with this being very helpful for adults, this is also an excellent skill for children to learn too! Awareness is the foundation to all life experiences and skills. When children increase their awareness in the present moment, they can increase attentive skills, better regulate their feelings, make safe choices, and notice and attend others' feelings. When children notice others' feelings, beautiful things like empathy, kindness, compassion, forgiveness, and appropriate assertiveness skills can begin to grow. Just think of a world where children could grow to carry around an awareness of their own inner peace and thus act in peaceful ways in a world that is sometimes anything but peaceful. That is a world I would want to live in and a world I would want to give to future generations. read more

This story celebrates our differences and new friendships, through the lives of gender non-conforming children. Tina is a young gi...rl who is not like the other girls - she doesn't like to wear the clothes her Mommy puts her in. And Jordan is not like the other boys - because inside he feels like a girl. The two meet on a playground when Tina comes to Jordan's rescue from two bullies calling him names. One day, two little monkeys were so bored they didn't know what to do. They were tired of playing with their puzzles, video games,... and all the other toys, and for once, they did all their chores early that day. They couldn't think of anything to do, so JT was just hanging around the house while Ana was playing with her favorite stuffed rabbit. It had big fluffy ears. One of the ears, the left one, is always bent down in front of his eye. It had a button for a nose. It was something her mother made her when she was a baby. She loved playing with it, and she took it everywhere she went. She suggested that they play hide-and-seek. JT played hide-and-seek with his sister before he knew that she was afraid of heights, and she was always the first to be found. Not wanting to hurt her feelings, he just said no and decided to just hang around the house, thinking it was better than playing with his little sister. He goes to see what his mother was up to. He finds her in the kitchen, but it wasn't long until she got tired of bumping into him. She asked him if he wanted to help her. This is something he really did not want to do--helping his mother in the house with the cooking and the cleaning. She really could have used his help, but he said no and wandered off to see what his father was doing. read more

She tries several things to get rid of them only to discover that no matter what she tries to do, they never go away. Will her excuses still work?
