Pura (pronounced poor-ah) Vida (pronounced veed-ah) literally translates to Pure Life. Mae (pronounced my) is Costa Rican slang fo...r friend or pal (like our "dude"). Pura Vida Mae is the story of a serene and mellow young iguana by the name of Daniel who enjoys living his life and relaxing in the sunshine. As he goes about his day, he learns that a great many other animals in the jungle do not share his fondness for a laid-back life. Some of these animals question him, and others simply go about their business. Daniel does have some very nice friends, though, and they share his love for an uncomplicated life of peace. His friends do not all look like he does, but they do have a great deal in common. Daniel can be himself with his friends, and they love each other for that. The message of this story is to love yourself and each other for who you are. I intend for this story to teach that gentle lesson. I began to write Pura Vida Mae after my first visit to Costa Rica, where I fell in love with everything about this amazing country. This place made a huge impression on me as a nature and wildlife enthusiast and conservationist as well as an artist; the love of life in all of its forms so apparent here. "Pura Vida" is the national greeting of the Costa Rican people. It means everything from "hello" and "nice day" to "good-bye" and "safe trip." Buffie Biddle is an artist, a writer, a lover of nature and wildlife, a conservationist, an educator (formerly) and an aunt (to two amazing boys). She graduated with a degree in fine arts, minoring in special education. All of these things are contributing factors to her writing as well as her artwork. Buffie gets her greatest delight from being around wildlife. She enjoys watching animal behavior and loves all things that make each aspect of the natural world unique-each texture, shape, and color. From the very first experience Buffie had of Costa Rica (Tortuguero is her favorite place there as of yet), she felt constant joy at the presence of life there: flora, fauna, culture, life, warmth (not just the temperature, which is nice also), sights and sounds, even smells. She was inspired as an artist, and as a lover of the natural world and of people. Buffie worked with children for nearly twelve years. She addressed behavior needs, often focusing on socialization, specializing in children with autism and their siblings as well as potential friends. At times, Buffie's work with these students involved the use of stories and scripts tailor made to fit the individual child, focusing not only on his or her needs but also on his or her areas of interest. Making a lesson more interesting made treatment more enjoyable, successful and therapeutic for the student in the long run. Buffie applies this idea to her stories, of which Pura Vida Mae is the first completed. read more

'Toot Toot Poop' is a book that teaches kids that there is no need to be embarrassed about bodily functions because everybody toot...s and everybody poops. This book makes the digestive process funny and entertaining. Not only does this subject appeal to children, but it contains real life strategies teaching how to manage bodily functions in public. Plus you know it's legit because it was written by an attorney. Emily Hess Ziehler When Emily's two-year-old son David did not show an interest in reading, but thought anything involving the word 'toot' or 'poop' was hilarious, Emily got an idea. She decided to write a book about David's favorite subject to help encourage a love of reading. Amazingly, it worked! Emily was born in Kettering, Ohio and grew up the oldest of seven children. She attended Ohio Northern University, and moved back to Dayton, Ohio to be close to family. She is an attorney by day, and a busy mom, wife and hobby writer outside of work. She lives with her son David and her husband Stephen. In her spare time, Emily enjoys reading, writing, ziplining, and spending time with her family. read more

Join Beamer and a classroom full of Middle School students on their journey to learn about Scoliosis. Dr. Moe helps us understand ...how the spine is impacted and what can be done to help, while the students teach us that no matter what happens in life, we should all show kindness and friendship to one another. "I really enjoyed this book. Cindy Chambers has captured the feelings of children at the typical age at which scoliosis is discoveredmiddle school. Because scoliosis develops silently and gradually, creating awareness helps timely detection. The reactions, care and proper support are so accurately described here. Both personal and group dimensions are covered. All of the information is accurate. I think this book will help many young people to deal with this challenge in a successful way." Paul David Sponseller, M.D., M.B.A. Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Chief, Division of Pediatric Orthopaedics Department Executive Vice Chair, Orthopaedic Surgery, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD "This clear, concise, and fun story, , makes it easy to understand what scoliosis is, how it is detected, diagnosed, and often treated. It also reveals every child's desire to be accepted by their peers, particularly when something beyond their control, like scoliosis, makes them different. Patients who have the support of their family, friends and medical professionals that "have your back" make all the difference, just like in Adie's experience. We are very grateful for Cindy Chambers, Dr. Moshirfar, and Mrs. Allan's 8th grade class at J. Lupton Simpson Middle School for their kindness in writing this wonderful book, promoting education, awareness, and compassionate care for children with scoliosis." Luke Stikeleather, BSW, CO President, National Scoliosis Center , Fairfax, Virginia http://www.nationalscoliosiscenter.com/ "Thank you for writing this outstanding story to help children understand scoliosis. Beamer and Dr. Moe do a great job explaining this common developmental pediatric condition. The more we empower our young patients with knowledge about their health conditions, the more they will embrace their differences and support their peers." Barbra Jill McCabe, MD, FAAP Medical Dirctor Pediatric Emergency and Hospitalist Services, Inova Loudoun Hospital, Leesburg, Virginia "What an honor to have Cindy Chambers share her talents with the students of J. Lupton Simpson Middle School! Her leadership and vision brought young minds to this dynamic and creative process to produce a book that will help children everywhere face the unknowns of scoliosis. In this twelfth Tell Me Town book, Cindy not only educates young readers but inspires middle school students. She provides students with an opportunity to make a difference in the world around them. Now if that's not respect, thoughtfulness and kindness, what is?" Chad D. Runfola Principal, J. Lupton Simpson Middle School, Leesburg, Virginia read more

Eugenie Charles, M.D., F.A.A.P. MR. WACKA BACKA BOO: The Keeper of The Zoo Mr. Wacka Backa Boo is an eccentric zoo keeper who challenges the status quo.  His hybr...id animal creations are quite beautiful and make for interesting combinations that children will love.  But, in the end, he learns that there is an order to nature and that the beauty we see around us is already perfect. CAROL CARLISLE Carol Carlisle always wanted to write stories.  Many of her stories are not in print, but are imprinted on the minds and hearts of her children and grandchildren. Carol’s stories have been told to her children and, now her grandchildren, as a means to ease restless children into peaceful slumber at the end of a long day.  Mr. Wacka Backa Boo is a favorite, for in their slumber, the children have dreamed of real-life encounters with the animals.  Bohemia the leopard, Bumps the turtle, Skiger and other imaginary zoo animals often find their way into the youngsters’ bedrooms to be fed and snuggled before being sent back to the zoo.  And, as storytellers, Carol’s grandchildren excel as they describe, with great embellishment, these fantastic encounters. Enjoy the book.  But, most of all, enjoy the experience of reading it to a child you love. The art work for this book is the creation of three generations of incredible artists:  Barbara Massey, Brenda Cagle Snow, and Anna Snow Nelson.  These soulful and spirited women see beauty in everything and have taught many others to do the same. read more

Raoul Wallenberg: Hero of Hope is a uniquely told child-friendly, non-fiction story of the consummate Christian Holocaust rescuer.... Mr. Wallenberg is accurately depicted as risking his life continuously to save the lives of those of another faith: the remaining Jewish men, women, and children targeted by the Nazis towards the end of World War 11, in Hungary. It is written with sensitivity towards, and respect for, the intended young readers. It presents Mr. Wallenberg’s non-violent courage and altruism as exemplars of hope and, also, to inspire and educate children of all religions and backgrounds as they are introduced to the difficult subject of the Holocaust. The book is both factually thorough and, at times, lyrical -- particularly when it describes the feelings of a child survivor to whom Mr.Wallenberg gave back the invaluable gifts of self-worth and hopefulness, as well as having saved her life.Ilene Munetz Pachman is a freelance writer and children’s book author, as well as a retired preschool and special needs teacher. AUTHOR'S BIOGRAPHY This is the first book written by Joyce Austin who grew up in Rhode Island hearing many stories of Guernsey fro...m her father and grandfather. The book was prompted by the birth of another Guernsey "cousin" and Joyce's wish to pass the family history along to the next generation. Joyce has visited Guernsey several times; the most recent trip being in May 2011 when she and her husband, son and daughter traveled there to celebrate the 100th anniversary of her grandfather's immigration to the US. This book was many years in the making mostly because it was in competition with the other activities in Joyce's life which include working as an oncology social worker, raising children, traveling, singing, riding horses, gardening, and taking photos. She continues to live in New Hampshire with her husband where they are working on enjoying their new status as "empty nesters" ILLUSTRATOR'S BIOGRAPHY Georgianna Ritter spent 10 years of her childhood living on an island which made her the perfect illustrator for this book. From a young age, her teachers in the small school she attended on Block Island, Rhode Island recognized her talent for pencil sketches, ink drawings and lettering. With the encouragement of her teachers she later left the island to attend art school where she excelled at photography and ceramics. Water colors only came into her life as an adult and she says initially she found it too intense. Only after learning to let go of control and perfection could she utilize quick and relaxed movements with the watercolor brush to produce beautiful pictures such as the ones she has created for this book. Georgianna and her family make their home in southern Maine. A young man named Will awoke one warm August morning in his family's stone cottage on the island of Guernsey in the English Channel. The year was 1910 and Will had been waiting with much anticipation for this day. He was about to begin his journey across the Atlantic Ocean to a new life in America. His younger brother, George, would make a different decision. He would stay on the tiny island where he would raise his family and make a good life there. But this book is not just about two brothers who each take a different path. It is about how the family remained connected; sharing their joys and troubles through endless letters. Even the strain of war could not sever the family ties. This book is about the strong family bond that lasted for more than a century despite the separation of many miles and several generations. read more

This book was inspired by a teacher I had in 4th grade. Her name was Mrs. Troyer and she would actually ask kids to come in front ...of the class and try to hiccup. No one ever did that I can remember. As a kid, I once had the hiccups 4 times in one day and became worried. I went to my dad. He told me that it was serious with a scared look on his face. I then thought it really must be bad until he laughed.I made up this story on the spur of the moment when my kids were young. I would tell them stories every night. This is one of their favorites and I have told it to several groups of kids and adults. About the Author I grew up in Plymouth Michigan where I learned to love books and reading. I wrote my fi rst story in 3rd grade. I had a teacher in 4th grade who was the inspiration for one of my stories. After I graduated from Plymouth Salem high school in 1975, I served in the U.S. Air Force as an electronics technician. I serviced B-52 bombers and fi ghter jets. After the Air Force, I studied art at Eastern Michigan university. I also studied at William Tyndall college and studied creative writing at Oakland Community college. After college, I used my electronics training and worked for A.T.T. INC. from 1980-2013. During this time, I worked with children at church and school settings telling stories. Kids and adults always seemed to enjoy them. My greatest audience was always my three kids, who I would tell stories to every night, all usually made up on the spot. I have tried to never forget what it is like to be a kid and remember what children like. I believe that even in adults, there is that child that loves to hear a good story. There is nothing like watching faces as you tell a story and see the enjoyment people display. I now live in Clarkston, Michigan where I tell stories to my grandchildren. read more
