The scalloped-back chair first gained popularity in the 1940s, when it was welcomed for a boudoir shape that felt pleasantly indulgent after the drab and reserved furniture of the post-war 30s. Design's long-standing affection for scalloping is also known as Biomorphism - the process of modeling artistic elements on naturally occurring patterns and living organisms.
