It’s always prime time for a summer rhyme! Who doesn’t have fond memories of the last day of school? The weather is the warmest it...’s been all year, the days are long and sunny, and there’s a sense that something is calling. . . that something called “summer.” Whether it’s grilling hot dogs and burgers on the BBQ, playing make-believe superhero, camping out and eating s’mores, or spending lazy afternoons in your club house, there is nothing like summer! And the poems of Summertime Rhyme capture all of your favorite moments and memories of the sunniest season of all. But not only that, the illustrations in this book are the work of kids who see the bright side of life as a result of surviving a darker side of life — cancer. No one knows the fun of summer like a child who’s had to miss it, being isolated from friends while undergoing cancer treatment. These delightful illustrations depict their vision of summertime, when hope is as big as the bright, blue skies. Your purchase makes a difference! 60% of the royalties from Amazon sales of this book go to the nonprofit Hopecam ($1.31 per book). Since 2003, Hopecam has connected kids isolated during cancer treatment with their friends, family, classmates, and teachers through video technology. As challenging and difficult as battling cancer is, children suffer additional emotional hardship from the isolation — in fact, some of them find it the worst part. Hopecam's program has changed this, making it possible for kids of all income levels and demographics to stay connected during their treatment. Video technology seems unremarkable in this day and age, but 70% of Hopecam's children live below the poverty level, where access to video communication is not ordinary. The illustrations in this book were drawn by kids who have survived cancer and gone through Hopecam's program. They thank you for your support and urge you to visit Hopecam.org for more information. read more
This exhibition, focused primarily on 20th century American picture book art is, in effect, a marriage of purpose and perspective ...between two cultural institutions, The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art and The Skirball Cultural Center. Commencing with medieval illuminated Passover Haggadot, the exhibition highlights miraculous themes from biblical stories, imaginary monsters such as dybbuks and golems and tales of the shtetl, the humble Jewish village once found in Eastern Europe. As well as featuring reproductions of the artwork in the exhibit, this catalog contains three essays: "The Jewish Picture Book: A Personal Appraisal" by Ilan Stavans, "The Story Within the Story" by Neal Sokol, and "Friend or Foe? Monsters in Jewish Picture Books" by Tal Gozani. read more

"A Fine Book of Letters" grew out of an exhibition of watercolors I created for a show on Martha's Vineyard in 2008. When I began ...the project I wanted to create letters with images that related to my life and environment. So, for example, I used my bunny for the "B". I also looked for flowers that grew around me and birds that inhabit my yard. The one exception is the California Quail. I really wanted to do the quail that has that cute little feather on it's forehead. Once I had done the whole alphabet if just seemed natural to make it into a book. The text just seemed to flow. And, I didn't "dumb it down". There are big words in here, which makes it a fun book for adults to read to children. It took a few tries, a lot of help from my book designer, A.Michelle, and a successful Kickstarter project to get the book self-published. It sold out in a couple of years and I was at a l loss as to how to get it reprinted until Create Space was recommended to me. When people ask me about purchasing the book I can now send them to Amazon! read more
