Whitney Port Shares Her Mom Must-Haves & Important Advice For Parents Struggling With Migraines

Whitney Port is mom to Sonny, 1 1/2 and is known for being open and candid about her journey with motherhood.  She recently revealed that she has been struggling with migraines since she was a young girl and now as an adult, her migraines have even caused her to miss out on important moments with her son. Can you talk about a time when a migraine stopped you from missing a special moment as a mom? My migraines can really affect my productivity, which means taking care of Sonny can sometimes feel impossible. Migraines make me feel like I can’t be present with him, play with him, or sometimes even just have patience with him.

 

What really stinks is I will usually wake up with a migraine. When they happen, I wake up to a throbbing pain that feels like someone is hitting me on the head over and over again. The hardest part about getting them in the morning is I have a hard time feeling motivated to get out of bed and see Sonny. He’s in the best mood when he wakes up so missing out on seeing his smiling face before he starts his day makes me so sad.

 

Do you have tips for parents who struggle with migraines? Since everyone’s migraine experience is different, it’s important to find a routine that works well for you. For me, I take Excedrin Migraine as soon as I feel it coming on and ask Timmy to step in and help. It’s important for parents to be patient with themselves and to not feel guilty when they’re unable to be fully present because of a migraine. It’s ok to lean on your partner for help and take time to rest until you’re feeling better. Do your best to treat your migraines as best and as fast as you can so you can get back to being the best parent to your child or children.

 

How can moms take a moment for to care for themselves, when either struggling with a migraine or perhaps feeling overwhelmed? As moms, we put our child’s needs first and sometimes we forget to take care of ourselves. When I struggle with a migraine, I take a moment to rest. It’s hard, but I really try not to feel guilty taking that time to recover rather than pushing through. Eating well-balanced meals and staying hydrated also helps keep my migraines to a minimum.

 

It’s hard to be the best parent to your child when you’re struggling with a migraine so taking the time to treat and even prevent your migraines can get you back to family time faster. For me, it’s taking Excedrin Migraine whenever I start to feel a migraine coming on.

 

What was a recent mom fail you experienced? I’m always discovering new ways to tackle new challenges with Sonny. When things don’t go exactly as planned, I wouldn’t necessarily call them “mom fails,” rather moments of learning and growth. Take this past weekend and upcoming weekend for example. We had to and have to be out of town two weekends in a row and I feel like I “failed” by mis-planning these things. I had anticipation anxiety leading up to the first weekend and tried to enjoy myself but was actually relieved when it was over which is sad! I know that taking care of myself and having time away is important but I never want Sonny to feel like we “want” to leave him. While I don’t ACTUALLY think he thinks that, sometimes I let my mind wander to worst case scenario and it prevents me from enjoying these necessary moments that are supposed to make me feel whole.

 

Do you have certain must-haves for self-care? Some things I always try to have on me to make sure I am taken care of throughout the day are: Hydroflask, nut packs (I LOVE sunflower seeds as a snack), Excedrin Migraine, Vichy Face Mist, and peppermint oil.

 

What are your favorite items (clothes, toys, books etc.) for Sonny? Some favorite things I am loving right now for Sonny are: All his new clothes from the H&M CONSCIOUS COLLECTION, this new book called Thank You Body, Thank You Heart by Jennifer Cohen Harper, Munchkin Sippy cups, Play Doh, Angel Dear loveys.
